Does the backlight turn on at all and turn gray? Or the LCD does not turn on at all?
Playing a game in lower resolution shouldn't change the aspect of the game at all. Playing at native resolution would be the most crisp but the 1920x1200 to me is what this laptop deserves. The 9 series procs will drop into our laptops...
First off check the voltage on the power supply to rule that out. To me your problem does sound like a motherboard issue.
Cheapest way to get one is on ebay. I personally have the Panasonic UJ-110 drive.
Since you laptop uses a desktop Pentium 4 CPU it more prone to overheating so a new dose of thermal paste and the fans being cleaned should help a lot.

I know some have at NBR but I personally haven't.
The m53xx series requires you to remove the top bezel from the bottom to access the second slot which is under the touchpad. It's a pain to unscrew everything but it's still accessible .
T9500 is also socket P so it should work w/o a problem.
