i've had this problem many times, usually i get half chance the screen will come back black there's a FAQ on gateway's website that suggests you to press Fn+F3 if it doesn't show.
i leave mine on 24/7 and there's no problem. mine is m505x (pentium-m btw). heat doesn't actually accumulate thru time, especially if u open the lid. if u plug it in i don't think u actually use the battary. the only problem i foresee is...
