there should be a remove-old.sh once you untar the driver file (in the latest version only) I didn't catch what distro you are using but this ubuntu forums thread might be useful for you.

You might have luck using cedega but I'm not sure. I see steam is at least referenced as a keyword on the HL2 Cedega page
