My advice? Move to Canada for like, 2 weeks, then while you're there call Dell Canada support and let them fix your machine. so long as you dont have a depot warranty you should be fine. Seriously.

True, are you using the Dell driver or a 3rd party one?
If you cant format then plug the HD back into the laptop, run dells PSA test (F12 and diagnostics upon post screen) and wait for the HD to fail. get error code, call dell, get hard drive replacement.
