Wow... would you be willing to go through a straight trade for a slightly used 9300 with a 6800 ultra card?
Yeah, sucks that the sales rep screwed things up that way. if he had sold you the discrete board that comes with the ati card at the least you could install the 7800 or the 7900gs.
this might be your issue: Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 - 802.11b doesn't support G.
I would also put my vote in for the lattitude. Generally they also come with a much better standard warranty then the inspirons. any day of the week.
I remember that mine used to show up as well before I did my bios flash to the gen2. now it doesn't show up in the "my computer" but when i insert a card it still picks it up fine.
If they've already had it sent to the depot within warranty then there's both a case and a dispatch already made on this system within the warranty time. even if you're out of warranty the issue showed up before the warranty expired. ...

I've seen it where windows will detect a dvd burner as a cd rom drive as well. format/reinstall worked on that one. some application you removed may have done it. did your system come with sonic or roxio and did you remove it?
could just do the image restore on the system, restore the ghost factory image on the system.
well... in terms of size, yes. in terms of power consumption, yes. in terms of being able to play games, yes. conclusion: Spyderm@n's right. in every way.
