Clear enough space off of your internal HDD for Vista (move data/media files to your new external) and create a partition for Vista with Acronis Partition Manager, Partition Magic, G-parted, or . . . . .

Try a BIOS update. Check what's enabled/disabled in the BIOS as well.
Check your mouse properties in the control panel. For example, my laptop has the option to disable the touchpad tapping while typing.
