I ordered my i600m on February 6th and it arrived on Februrary 12th. Not bad considering the supposed ship date was February 14th. I think Dell likes to overestimate the ship date incase something goes wrong while in production.
The security lock holes are on the side of the notebook. They are the small ovals at one of the corners. One of my suite mates at school had a lock for his i9100 but i have no idea where he got it. I think Dell sells one but not 100% sure.

My 600m makes the same sound sometimes. Don't know why. I think it might be the charging thing but not sure. Mine does it mostly when it's plugged in.
I have the SXGA+ on my 600m and as far as programming on 96DPI it would be kinda small type but on 120DPI it would be perfect. I leave mine on 96 since it's just for genereal use and it doesn't bother me but if I had to work on it for hours at a time I might have to do 120 DPI. My mom got a new 600m with the XGA and honestly I don't like it at all. Everything is too big for me. Good luck with your decision.
I also suggest the 3 or 4 year warranty. It will pay for itself if you ever have to use it past the first year. My whole D8300 system was replaced in Apr. '04 after having it only a year and last September the harddrive crapped out on me while away at school. Besides that I've had no problems but I also got the 4-year warranty on my 600m I got in February this year.
As far as which processor I don'tthink you'll see a difference between the 1.73 and 1.86 . The money...
I think desktops will always be around. While notebooks are portable and convenient and even great gaming machines now, desktops will always have the new technology in them first. Laptops lag behind but not by much. Since I gotm y i600m I don't use my D8300 as much but I still use it for 98% of my gaming. If I had a 9300 or XPS 2 maybe that would change who knows.
The 700m would be good to take to class no doubt. As far as watching DVD's it should be fine as portable DVD players have smaller screen and I've seen those and well they make the 12" screen on te 700m look huge. Watcing movies shouldn't be an issue. The 700m may be perfect for you. I suggest you order one when the time comes and if you don't like it you can send it back within the 21 day period and order a 6000 or 600m if you think you need a bigger screen but want...
