The use of function keys is a specific software from Sony, and most other laptop manufacturers work the same way. Look for drivers from the Sony support site or use the CD that came with the notebook. x.

I like CCleaner, myself. http://www.ccleaner.com It's more for cleaning out things like old registry entries, unassociated extensions, etc., but I find it makes the system more snappy, too. x.
I agree with the Powerbooks and I think the IBM Thinkpads. x.
Mine doesn't seem to have any problem either reading CDs or DVDs or writing to CDRs. x.
I have the North Face one and I like it a lot. My laptop (Thinkpad T42) fits in nicely and it's padded. I've had it for a couple of days now and I like it so far. x.
A laptop isn't necessary in college, but as many others have said, it is really nice to have. I'm going into my senior year and I've had laptops and desktops since I started college, switching off, and finding that I never took my laptop...
