if you are sure it is not heat, and i play both those games with that driver set... i would double check to make sure that maybe (somehow) your card got overclocked a little it could be causing it. otherwise...sounds like bad ram on...
i just downloaded the new Omega drivers (based off the 4.12 finals) and it specifically "* Forced some wide screen resolutions that didn't worked on previous set." i am going to go try them out right now, if any one else...
as for the control panel you can go to the folder where you extracted/modded your drivers and go to the folder (i believe) it is marked cpanel and install the control panel manually by running the setup/or inf file int there

like i said, i'm not sure exactly how long an 8x burn would take (7 minutes) since i've never got one done properly but fujifilm (best buy instant rebate 9.00 for 25 disks) burns in 10 minutes...

ok here is your last resort, that has always worked for me in a pinch. uninstall you old drivers and restart your computer, when it starts up its going to say "found new hardware VGA ADAPTOR" or whatever just click...
i also have a 6500 in my 3790, i have found media that will burn at 6x (TDK and fujifilm) both of those are supposed to burn at 8x (oh well a few minutes longer). you have to remember too even though you may keep buying TDK or some...
