Are you inserting the SD card totally perpendicular into the reader slot and have you tried more than one SD card to rule out if it's the SD card that's got issues?

If the volume dial is integrated into the motherboard then, yes, the entire motherboard will have to be changed. That's just a fact of life when it comes to laptops.
The 5205 will support up to 2x 512MB or 1x 1GB SODIMMs for 1GB absolute max. Any RAM configuration higher than 1GB will cause the laptop to crash on POST.
What's the condition of the battery itself? Have you tried swapping batteries to see if the problem is battery related or system board related?
Have you checked the actual system operating temperatures with a utility such as SpeedFan (my personal fave) or the like? Check the temperature graphs and note when the fan runs and see if there's a correlation. Also, how's your Power...
