What's the refresh rate you are using for your specific resolution and is the external monitor capable of running at said refresh rate and resolution in the first place?
Did you remove the CPU's heatsink and if so, did you clean the underside of it and apply an even film of new thermal grease where the CPU contacts said heatsink?
