Anything short of WPA is insecure as far as consumer oriented tools go. Of course it's better to add a door into your house even if it's a paperweight (WEP) than nothing at all. SSID Broadcast disabling really doesn't improve...
You can buy a signal booster (basically picks up the signal and retransmits it) to install on your front porch. Your other option is to get a longer range external antenna for your laptop.
