Yes, it'll take larger HD's. When the manual was printed, I'm sure the 100gb drives werent out yet, or it could be just copied from the older manuals. But to answer your question- it does take larger drives.
I doubt its from the machine over heating. I've seen this problem before and i've also seen that laptop. It's a good little unit, but if you only bought it 3 weeks ago, I suggest you try to return it or have them exchange it with you....
