Well to answer your first question...Don't buy it until you really need it because technology advances so fast and loses value even faster.

Thats a decent laptop for a good price. Don't go down to 1280 x 800. The GPU is descent but nothing out of the crowd...The laptop isnt realy out of the crowd like you said you wanted...

The Intel® Core(TM)2 Duo MobileProcessor 1.83GHz is more then enough...Unless you really plan on juicing every bit of power out of it...By the time you will need to upgrade the processor you will want a new laptop anyways lol If I were...

Both of those HPs would be fine for what you want it to do and both are basically equiped with the same specs...The HP Pavilion dv2840se seems like a bit updated version so you should go for that between those 2. Take a look at a Dell...

This laptop will allow you to do everything you want on it and will play all games you want it to play...They only thing that would make me ask questions, is the 17" screen...The specs are nice on it.

Dell XPS M1530. I had the same choice and ended up getting a MBP for just a bit over 1600 because I like OSX and you can also put Windows now and they are super sexy
