I've been having these same issues with my 7700. I've replaced the HDs with sata ones, and tried imaging the drives from external enclosures onto other 2.5" HDs and used those to the same results. It looks like the same issue...
4x 1gb, or 2x 1gb and 2x 512mb dimms would produce the same result as 2x 2gb in a 7700m.
