you can always just change the resolution by going into display properties

did you check the temperature? since you didn't install the cpu driver, the cpu isn't working to full capacity, so less heat > no shutting down.... well, that's my guess

it was probably a virus, only way to solve such things is a format and reinstall (like you did)... shutting off a computer while it's running (especially when your harddrive is running) is bad for your computer but, once is no problem
