I would make sure you have all your hardware (brand names) copied for the device drivers. Maybe even call Dell and ask for a "trade" from Vista to XP for their proprietary cd/dvd. At least you would have your hardware covered.
There is a linux "live cd" that claims to be able to do this. You can also edit the registry. It is called "bt2final.iso". Google this to find more out about it, it is a 690mb download.
