The thing I like most about VLC is that it reads/plays DVD's fast. I have WinDVD and Interactual Player and both of them take forever to read my DVD drive. In VLC, I just load the drive name and I'm watching a movie like that.
I use Winamp although I have iTunes to organize my collection. I make playlists in Winamp and use that for listening and use iTunes for organizing/editing info on files.

Definitely going with VLC for video. I still like Winamp because I like the clean layout and I'm a longtime Winamp user so there's so nostalgic reasons for using it.
I would uninstall it from the Control Panel and then disable all the services/tasks related to it. That's what I did and it doesn't give me any problems. I'm using Symantec antivirus instead.
