It took a little under two hours to disassemble my laptop and find the headphone jack thing hanging off a little. So I soldered... everything that remotely looked like a circuit on that thing, reassembled, and tried it out.
Haha,...
Notebook Hardware control did have a power-info screen that would "estimate" how much your battery had been worn down. But I think its estimate varies from when you're at 3% charge and "113"% charge.

Okay, I listen to my laptop on the bus (and mind you, the hard drive still has no scratches ), but I'm thinking my constrictive bag is taking a toll on the headphone-jack while they're plugged in and the laptop is in the bag. The jack...
This is ridiculous, but I'd like it if somebody satisfied my curosity.

Check in your power settings (control panel) that you haven't got your hard drive to turn off after three minutes or so. That gets quite annoying during gaming when mine will just turn off and I'll lag for 5 seconds.
My old inspiron 8000 had one of those (I assume I'm talking about the right one). Those things were awesome. I could type and then switch to move the mouse around (not to mention drag easier) and with much less latency than using the...
