You don't need anything. Go to Control Panel and change your power profile. Always On = Always run at max speed on AC or battery. Home Office = Runs at max speed on AC clocks down on battery.

The Noise does not sound too good. What has Acer said about the noise? Have any of you contacted Acer?
For a brand new notebook I would not put up with it. Sound like some kind of slight hardware conflict possibly.
Did you opt to create a Recovery Image DVD of you HD when you first turned the machine on? I would use that to restore you Ferrari and in the meantime send the CDS back for a new set.
Windows Media Player will probably play all your HD-WMV. My 3-4 minute long videos 349MB in size [Interlaced MPEG2 - 1920x1080 ] it cannot play back.
I always found InterVideo WinDVD 6 or 7 Platinum to work flawlessly.
It plays HD Videos fine. I have many music videos/performances about 349MB in size each 1920x1080 Format. Windows Media Player to plays them? Windows Media Player definitely cannot handle it.
