I have nearly the same machine as the OP: Dell 9300, 3 Gigs of RAM, a slower (1.6 GHz) processor, and a 1920x1200 display though. I know I have problems playing back 1080P video; it can be jerky on high-motion, high-complexity scenes....

Look to see if this might be a case of overly-aggressive HDD power-down schemes.... "Clicks" can sometimes mean the drive head(s) seeking full-range across the platters, namely going to a safe landing zone.
Dell Inspiron 15/Studio 15 or XPS 1530 would fit the bill.
I still see the scrolling one. But Arch's point sounds interesting. Nothing says "1980's tile-based RTS game than solid 'backgrounds' ". Transparent backgrounds could go a long way....maybe try the current one out on several...
