I ain't sellin' my lappy, no way. But: look at the business-class HPs if you can. They go through a solid QA cycle, and, with fewer features than their consumer-grade counterparts, there are fewer things to go wrong. For more money,...
I guess I've had my m1530 for six months or so. I'll have to look to see what manufacturer made the drive. I'm at work now and don't have access to it.
I have the m1530 as well. And my drive clicks occasionally as well. I always thought it had to do with the power-down mode of the drive.

To answer some of your questions: 2. No, they use standard (mobile-spec'ed) Intel processors. 3. Yes you could in general keep them running cooler. However, I thought they ran pretty cool as-is?
"power-consuming standby mode"... This is why most modern consumer electronics is called "vampire electronics". Their "off" mode isn't really off.
It won't hurt the hardware.
Sounds like a codec, not the player. Find out whether this problem occurs for every type of video source (divx, standards mpeg 2, quicktime, etc.).
Frankly, it sounds like a Speedstep issue to me. Cyclic good/bad/good/bad... performance, often the processor stepping down in frequency way too aggressively.
What did the Event Viewer logs say? Anything?
