if you're intending on breaking it that is fraud.
while component is capable of 1080p, NVIDIA graphics cards are restricted to 1080i by the drivers. you have to use VGA or DVI to get 1080p out unfortunately.

like you said, supply & demand at work here. plus the manufacturing costs for notebook parts are much higher due to lower economies of scale (higher initial price which can linger at low amounts of supply and high demand).

That's probably true somewhat. You should see what the original XPS Gen 1 goes for on a regular basis (it's more than $1100).
