I am also a big trackpoint fan. Although,you will notice with Toshiba, Dell and HP that their trackpoints are not as good as IBM. Trackpoint for them is an after thought where IBM pays good attention to trackpoint and keyboard.
I don't know about your model but generally with ACPI enable systems, windows xp shares IRQ with a number of devices. Since you already dropped it off at the service center, I would have advice to play around with BIOS settings.
I was thinking of particular model #s..Like I know that only the Tecra series in Toshiba has option of Trackpoint and ofcourse almost all models of IBM has it.
Does any one have a list compiled with notebooks that have Trackpoint / Trackstick? I've seen most manufactures abandoning this feature which, personally, I find it to be most useful. The decision for me to buy my next notebook will...

I'll be opening my notebook for the system board replacement today. I'll post the exact part number tonight or tomorrow.
I see this problem (memory slot) on lots of tecra 8100. Happened on mine also. I just bought myself a system board from ebay just because of this damn problem. Should someone take a survery or gather signatures and contact Toshiba...
I also upgraded mine from 500 to 850. It definately made a big difference. OTH, fan runs all the time.
