What version of XDirectFB were you using? The one in the current portage tree isn't the latest. I happened to go to their site and the latest version of DirectFB claims to have basic radeon support.

I had the same problem. For some reason, I felt I had to have a mouse from the console, so I had gpm loading at boot. After I learned enough commands and got xdm working I quickly took it out.

Quick suggestion, maybe CTRL+ALT+F1 would be easier to get to the command line? This is what I tell people to do, just because I can't guarantee CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE will work everytime.

Newer version of Lilo do not have this problem, but you may be hard pressed to find a mainstream distro that uses a current version. You are better off using Grub.
