Make sure 'latch' closes when shutting... very common problem you describe. Also, check device manager for any devices 'dinged' out. Although you might think these are unrelated, may give you great indices for root cause.

registry settings can prevent this too... they are all tied to power management settings and screen closure behaviors. Try regedit and search registry for *apm*
another thought... try right clicking on a blank area of your desktop screen | choose properties | and go thru the various tabs. I think you can find settings in there to correct your problwn.
Another thought, have you checked the Power Management schemes within windows? There are options for different behaviors when the lid is closed. Might be worth your while to look into that. The 'help' system within windows will...
