normally you don't need very much as5. but the gap between the gpu and the heatsink for the 7800 is wide enough that you do indeed require a much thicker layer than normal.
you as5 layer is too thin. my first 2 applications were really thin. got 103C in FEAR. applied again and put WAY more as5. FEAR load temp dropped to 97C. idle @ 60C
i still requested a replacement gpu from dell. put an even thicker...
i've got my 7800 clocked @ 440/1200.
idle
cpu ~30
gpu ~47-49C
load
cpu ~57
gpu ~90C in FEAR (this is the hottest running game i own)
these are fangui temps so add +6C to the gpu temps for the actual numbers. i haven't played hl2 in...
i think your as5 application is too thin. i did TWO really thin applications and FEAR maxed out at 97C according to i9kfangui which means its real temp was 103C.
i did as5 a 3rd time w/ a thicker layer and the max temp on FEAR dropped...
i got a new gtx a few days ago. clocked @ 440/1200
idles @ 51-53C
load @ 76-90C
these temps are from i9kfangui but adjusted for the -6C temps it reports
