It's noise by the way. As mentioned what hard drives are in the laptops? My T43p has a 7200rpm 60gb drive. The only noise I hear from it is a bit of chatter when it's accessing data. Your laptop might have a noisier make of drive,...
Pretty much nothing will match the T or X series in build quality. Better than Dell, Apple, HP, Acer, Toshy and on and on. The R and G aren't bad either. Performance specs have gotten to where you can get a pretty decent machine...
That has nothing to do with the Nano but I agree it pwns the shuffle.

For a notebook I'm all about the Pentium M chips. great balance of power/performance and battery life. But for the desktop Athlon64 X2s are where it's at now. When I build a new system I'll retire my current P4 2.8C for one of those X2s.

The T series is in more direct competition with the powerbooks, but even then it's better built and faster. I personally think the iBooks hold up better than the powerbooks, but even still the T is somewhat in a class of its own...
