Ubuntu automatically adds all the scripts for the Fn keys (ie. it configures asus_acpi correctly). I strong recommend using Ubuntu unless you know how to custom compile the asus_acpi module for your kernel.
Try a cold boot. Shutdown the laptop for about 10 minutes and turn it back on. I have this problem when I restart from linux --> windows without shutting down first.
