My 7800GTX runs fine at over 90C, the really demanding games cause it to throttle back at over 100C, but the worst that happens is the game gets a little choppy - no crashes. I'd suspect bad ram or driver conflict if you haven't...

I don't think you'll find a one-stop solution. I use RipIt4Me and Autogk, they keep the process of DVD to Xvid pretty simple.
All in all, $750 seems cheap upgrade from 2.0 GHz XPS2 to 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo and 512MB 7900Go GTX.
The only way to get a flush bezel is to buy from Dell, any other optical drive will sit a couple of mm inside the line of your notebook. If the look is so important, you can always take the bezel off your current Dell drive and fit it...
NEC ND 6750 A has been a popular choice for 9300 and XPS2 owners.
If you like messenger bags look at Crumpler or Pakuma (@eBags in the US). You will find something that holds 17" notebook, PSU, Mobile phone, MP3 player and even overnight clothing. Not cheap, but won't advertise the fact fact...
