Though since it sounds quite serious, I think you should contact Gateway's technical support and have it take a look. Hope that your M505 is still within its warranty period.

My AV panel can be turned on...
The problem is that the CD-Drive on the M505X/XL is a slot loading drive. I don't see the emergency eject hole that is on most tray drive. I guess you have to refer to Gateway Support.
