That doesn't sound good at all. I would suggest running some diagnostics on that hard drive. Anytime I see that problem it is either spyware or a failing hard drive, and seeing as you say it clicks i'm leaning towards the second one. So...
Is this the stock heatsink or a replacement? It will help to list the laptop model as well.
I would suggest running some hard drive diagnostics on it. I'm not sure if sony has thei own or not, but you can download another manufacturers and give it a try. It does sound like the hard drive though.
I've done it with some t20's before. It did install some new hardware upon bootup though. I think as long as they are the same series it would probably would, but if you have two different chipsets it's pretty much a no go.
Yeah I would say stay away from ecs. They don't even do the warranty on their laptops! I had to call some third party company for a customer.
I've never done it myself but I seem to remember it being not that safe because of the voltage. I think it is supposed to spike when you turn it on and if it doesn't then it's dead. But I could be totally wrong. Just use a voltmeter.
I have seen a few acer laptops with that exact problem. On those if i squeezed the edge around the lcd it would go away. I'm not sure what the issue was be acer replaced the lcd's in the laptops.
Did you buy a 512mb stick of ram or 2 sticks of 256?
