I wouldn't be shocked to see ATI beginning to roll out some mobile parts this year. Like NV, the mobile counterpart to the X1800 XT will be very similar to the desktop version and will require little tweaking.
Now if they managed to stick the guts of the 9750 (AMD-X2 + 7800/X1800) into something smaller (like the 5720), that would be the killer of killer laptops.
That's very abnormal behavior for this notebook. How intensively have you been using it?
Since you're still under warranty, see if Sony can do something about it.
