In X, or at the console? Does an attached mouse work?
For X, just make sure it's configured as a Synaptics (but that's an X thing, unrelated to the kernel).
I'd recommend staying far away from NetGear, myself. They have a problem with overheating, and need to be rebooted fairly often.
If you want the 108Mbps, stick with the D-Link. It's not perfect, but it's a lot more reliable than...
OK, you asked.
If someone gave me a Gateway, I'd sell it on eBay and buy something else. We have them at work and they've given us nothing but trouble. They lock up at random times, the wireless doesn't work worth a damn, and I...
Mine's not bad (though, yeah, the software could be better). The "blocky" thing is a driver issue. Since you mention the USB has an exclamation point, it's probably with the USB drivers.
You haven't said which OS you're...
I may have missed where someone said this earlier, but *never* run your 8790 with the lid down. A lot of the heat on those machines dissipates up through the keyboard. If you run it that way, you won't have to worry about the display...
If it's not, try booting from a CD... either a Windows CD so you can try a reinstall on top of your broken setup, or something like a Linux live CD, which you can use to get your machine booted up so you can access the files on your disk.
I think that's the first "review" of any laptop cooler I've seen with *any* hard data in it. One of the reasons I've never picked one up is because I've never seen any proof they do any good.
Thanks!
