Whilst it's certainly not a toughbook, it's sturdy enough. It might forgive a few knocks here and there, but remember, a one year old is a mighty force of nature, a force which a notebook might never be able to withstand!
The Powernow technology is built into the cpu, so when you buy the cpu it should clock itself up and down accordindly. Mine is currently running at 800mhz and at a cool 34C.
There was a test on "The Gadget Show", where they connected a brand new computer to the net, no firewall, no antivirus. In 45 minutes, XP refused to boot...ouch. You can get viruses without clicking any files, they can...
Mobilemeter works well for me. Gives you CPU frequency, temp, HD temp as well as charging voltage.
If you're going to run apps like office, you shouldn't see any difference at all, generally speaking, only apps written with 64bit in mind will you see some serious speed increases. Like smp_homer said, you'll have to watch out with x64...
Home will work fine, the pro version allows for various network extentions. Unless you're working in a corporate environment somewhere, home is more than adequate for normal use.
Certainly for Ram upgrades, it won't affect your warranty.
