I don't have a helpful suggestions, but I'm curious why you had to remove the keyboard to install RAM? My TP (T42p) has a small panel on the bottom, held on by one screw, where the open slot is.

I should have qualified the comment by saying outside China. To quote, "This isn't part of their thinkpad lineup"...and thus the thread title, "non-Thinkpad".
