Have you tried hitting Fn+F7 and using the Thinkpad display scheme utility. You can create an extended desktop scheme. Just click <New> and follow along. I'm assuming it will work in W2K.

Don't know a thing about the Asus Z96j (Asus desktop mobos are great though), but where did you find the HP NC8430 for under $1300? They certainly don't have one on the site for that price.

The best laptop cases made are Brenthavens: http://www.brenthaven.com/index.html They are pricey...but built like no other case.

Bad news - You will not be able to upgrade the processor to Core 2. Good news - Most of the time Lenovo delivers before the estimated date. By the time there's a lot of 64 bit applications, you'll be ready to upgrade anyway.
