Go for the hauppauge wintv usb 2 tuner. It works great with MCE 2005 and has great reception. Also the supplied WinTV software is pretty good. The TV reception is also quite good.
i do have a desktop but it is kind of old with only 256MB RAM and 1.6 Ghz P4 so not recommended for mce 2005. The upgrades would have costed much more for the desktop. Besides there is no difference in picture quality between the two...
mce2005 is much more refined and has all the other features such as pic. and music organizer, online spotlight etc. and you can control everything using a remote control (check out some of the reviews of mce 2005)

go for the emachines I had a toshiba P25 which I sold for a Emachines 6811 and I am more happy now. You wont go wrong with the 6811. P25 is larger heavier and has a crappy video card
