Gigabit ethernet is already present, so no adapter needed. But I still have some doubts about the actual speed. 100 Mbit ethernet has never been capable of giving as much as speed as advertised, in my experience.

Another possibility is using a network harddrive with gigabit ethernet connection (1000Mbps). The advantage is that 1) the M3438 already has gigabit ethernet so no adapter is needed and 2) it will be easier to connect other computers...

The difference in speed seems to be negligible. The drive OTOH...40 gb is awfully small, no recommended if you're planning to store video in any capacity or for any purpose.
