Heh, mine does the same thing, but the cmos battery is just fine. I think it's the bios chip itself. Good luck with the upgrades, however you might be better off just getting a newer laptop.
Sounds like your video card is messing up. These older sagers have an issue with their video cards with age. I'm glad mine still works sorta.

Try pulling out the bios chip. Same thing happaned to my 5600. Works untill it flips out again. Usually takes a few months. Bad bios chip.
Thats messed up. i845 says it's supposed to do 533fsb. How about USB 2.0? Does the machine have the ability to run high speed usb?
