the 13 inch macbook (not pro) also fits the bill very well. If you miss windows you can always purchase it seperately and if i recall bestbuy has a discount on OS upgrades purchased with new machines

well if you sold it on ebay you can offer third party warranties such as squaretrade i was able to sell lots of expired warranty machines this way as warranty makes up for a good deal on gamer laptops that could have potential failure...

Its most likely the drive and since you have ordered a new one your problem will most likely end once the drive is replaced.
have you had overheating issues before?
sounds like inverter to me but as qhn suggests test the laptop on an external monitor to insure its nothing relating to windows or the the videocard.
