I have a 500gb 5400 rpm 2.5 available however its 12.5mm height as opposed to the normal 9.5. This drive will likely fit in larger gaming rigs like the dell XPS, Toshiba Qosimo and Alienware systems but not the smaller ones.

I might actually suspect the drive itself. Seeing as how you got it from ebay the seller may have an additional drive. I own a UJ-120 and when i had the 1730 ran in DMA2 without fail.
the FX1600 is roughly a geforce 8600 which depending on how you look at it is slower than the 7900 in most games but obviously allows for DX10 rendering. although in my opinion the DX10 feature is pretty worthless on a x600 series card...
