No, not really hypothetical. Ive already had it replaced once and ive only had one for about 4 months. Iam thinking in 4 years this one wont last either seeing at how the screen is already starting to do what the last one did.
I refused to send mine in when the Dell tech dropped my XPS M140 while replacing the screen. They didnt really understand why but I expressed my concern and I got a replacement M140.

So I have Complete Care for 4 more years and I was looking in Dells Outlet which is where they get there replacement notebooks from, and they dont have the M140 listed? So what if something happens to mine and it needs to be replaced...
I have the same problem but mine is with next business day repair. It shows 234 days left and 730 days in a seperate row but dell says it only has 234 days on the warranty??????
