Thanks for those ideas, but the drive seems to work fine when I dual boot (or boot from the CD), the disks read fine elsewhere, and everything DID work fine under RH 9, etc. I am almost beginning to think that the drive itself is flakey.
I haven't resorted to using cdrecord directly yet (Judas Priest, it has a lot of options and I feel like I'll make a LOT of coasters in the meantime), but I think that's a good idea.
