thanks denb, I think you misunderstood: I know it would FIT, but I'm too cheap to spend the money! especially not being sure it would completely FIX the problem. That is, I don't know if the drive not working (not recognising a disk) is...
Just a heads-up: CompUSA has a sale on PNY 2GB [2x1GB] DDR2-5300 667MHz memory for $79.99. I read some reviews online and most are good. Price is better than NewEgg. Sale's on for a few more days. Dave
That's a very nice HD but I would have thought a bit of overkill on this machine. I haven't got any pretensions to this laptop being high-performance, just pure utility. [Even holding out on more memory to see if I really 'need'...
I'm looking at more RAM but don't really need it yet. Definitely if I keep the machine I will. BTW, Fry's has it on sale this weekend, [2x]1GB for 70 bucks. Dave

Can someone advise where I could get hold of a cheap (used would be OK) drop-in replacement CD/DVD-ROM drive for my old emachines 6805. Thanks! Dave
'Windows will not protect you without third party software' Thanks, that's mainly what I needed to know. She signed up for a year of McAfee for $35, it seemed OK. How good is AVG? I have downloaded it, but don't really need it yet....
