I think the problem is that my Panasonic uses Digital Spread Spectrum. It is a security feature that constantly changes the channels so people can't snoop in on phone conversions. So I think this is the problem. The feature probably runs back and forth through the 2.4ghz frequency and bumps me off, where a normal 2.4 ghz phone might not. This is what I get for buying the slightly more expensive, more features phone.
