I too have tried to find out which (brand/speed/+/-) to use and came to the conclusion that you just gotta buy some discs and see if they work.

KidVI is prolly right, by having both the DIGI and HD running on firewire your saturating the bandwidth, hence the errors.
When I upgraded 8880 to a internal 7200rpm drive it was "night and day" for my DAW.

In Partition Magic theres an option to "Set Active"
You need to do this or else the drive won't boot.
As a fun side note WIN2K is especially picky when you move/copy/image it to another...
