if the code is translated into something os x can read natively, then where is the performance loss? like you said, the calls arnt being converted dynamically; what causes slowdowns with precompiled binaries ? i don't know much about...

MS office is PPC anyway so i would avoid that either way if you are looking at a new mac. my vote goes to Neo, i use it every day and works wonders. and if all you need to open is ms word docs, the textedit app that comes with OS X can...
the only bloatware i got on mine was an MS office trial and an iWork trial.. but yea, its not hard to remove.. and on the restore disk you have the option to pick and choose what apps, fonts, sounds and extra (print) drivers are installed.
its weird, the first 2 or 3 months it was the fastest laptop i had ever used.. then it all went down hill.. maybe it was the 10.4.9 update, but i belive the issues happened before that... i still <3 apple, cause yea every company...
