well, i was hoping to set it up /w the wireless connection, cause i don't want to be forced to keep the laptop in the computer room during the long install... thts kind of y i got a laptop. is there no way to set it up b4 the install?

Personally, i'd do what Lord Sonde said : reformat, and reinstall everything. The only thing you actually NEED is the windows xp disk, since you can download the drivers off...
I have a similar problem, and I am using the synaptics drivers. For me, the 4 way scroll buttons don't work, at all. not in firefox, or anywhere else. they work everywhere but firefox when i use acer's drivers.
how about the acer travelmate 4404? its not dual core, but its got a decent videocard, u can upgrade the cpu to a 2.2ghz turion mt-40, and the ram to 2gb. it'll be well within your budget, fast as hell, and compile pretty damn fast.

yea, your going to have to replace the modules. i wish acer would just install it as a single 1gb stick, but they don't. there are only 2 available slots for ram, and so the 512 sticks have to be replaced. when i buy the 5672, i'm going...
i seriously recommend you jump in with both feet, and try gentoo. its hard, but if you follow the handbook, you'll make it. it takes hours to do it (sometimes days) but at the end, you know every single item installed on your machine....
