If you recently bought the NB then you are covered by the warranty. Call Compaq's tech support and they will send you a replacement. The number is 1800-HP-INVENT
If the NB is under warranty I would recommend to send it for service, I've seen this issue and they usually end up replacing the MB.
Try unplugging everything from the NB, take out the battery and try to hold the power button for 30 seconds. Connect the AC adapter and test. If it doesn't work and you are OOW you are looking at a $700 repair with HP.
